Webinar Questions and Answers

  1. Q - When the stable version cPanel 11.24.5 will be released? As of the webinar, cPanel 11.24.5 is in STABLE. However, there is no ETA on when cPanel/WHM version 11.25 will propagate to the STABLE build.
  2. Q - Answer when you can please: We use x3 theme on our cpanel. Do we need to update it too or all these new function will be seen automatically? If you are using the x3 theme supplied by cPanel then it will be automatically updated. If you have built a custom theme based off the x3 theme, all updates will need to be manually imported into your custom theme. If you are looking to customize the cPanel interface, we recommend using our branding system and dynamicui.conf. You can read more about this at:
    http://www.cpanel.net/blog/integration/2010/01/recommendations-from-the-field.html
  3. Q - Can we use the same certificate for all the services or one SSL for each service? You are welcome to use one SSL certificate for all services if you desire. However, you will need to install the SSL certificate into each service individually.
  4. Q - Slides 27 - 31. This certificate installation process and use has always been a little obscure. Are there full explanatory notes somewhere? Full documentation on this is available at:
    http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/view/AllDocumentation/WHMDocs/ManageSslcerts
  5. Q- Slide 34: is the mobile theme also Iphone optimized? The optimizations that were made to our mobile interface and the cPanel/WHM/Webmail service will benefit all mobile users accessing the cPanel interface. The mobile theme is not optimized for any platform specifically.
  6. Q - How do you access the mobile cPanel? I never knew this feature existed. Just use your mobile browser to login to cPanel as you normally would. The software will automatically detect you are using a mobile browser and present a mobile interface instead.
  7. Q - Does the bandwidth graph now count's bandwidth used by a script that uploads files to other places? (Is bandwidth reliable now?) Bandwidth information is reliable for all traffic that is monitored. However, since Apache does not report bandwidth consumed by such scripts, it is not yet included in the bandwidth information.
  8. Q - Are you planning any EU events (UK?) for cPanel this year? It would be great to see you over here. We are always exploring the addition of events. At this time we are not planning on hosting a event in the UK, however, we will be actively participating in Webhostingday which will be held in Germany in March 2010. We look forward to meeting our EU partners at WebHostingDay.
  9. Q - Password strength configuration - setting that up - I assume it will not affect any existing passwords. Just new and changing passwords? Correct, this only influences passwords changed via cPanel and WHM after the configuration is set.
  10. Q - With the password controls. Are you able to set requirements for example, 1 symbol, 1 number and characters? The Password Strength controls work on the basis of overall password strength rather than arbitrary rules about requiring numbers and characters.
  11. Q - Slide 25, please explain reverse proxies. The reverse proxy feature of cPanel/WHM allows connections to ports like 2083, 2087 etc. be performed via port 80. The web hosting customer behind a corporate firewall goes to a URL over port 80, which then fetches information from another port, such as port 2083 for cPanel, and relays that to the web hosting customer via port 80.
  12. Q - What exactly is the "SMTP Tweak" option in the security center. There's just enable/disable and no description of what it's for or what it does. Is this the option used to prevent users from sending email as nobody? SMTP Tweak prevents users from uploading their own mail servers (such as a PHP-based mail server) and using that to send mail from your server's IP address rather than adhering to the restrictions of your mail server. When SMTP Tweak is enabled, such tools will not function. Instead, customers will need to use your mail server to send mail. This tweak does not adversely impact scripts that are designed to send mail through your mail server, such as those which rely on sendmail.

The option to prevent the nobody user from sending mail is in Tweak Settings.
  13. Q - Can you translate WHM to another langage? If so, how is this done? (Slide 55) WHM will become translatable in a future version of cPanel/WHM as a result of the work performed for localization in 11.25. However, at this time, WHM is not yet translatable.
  14. Q - How do you disable the advanced DNS editor? Can you enable it for some cutomers, and diable it for others? (Slide 58) The Advanced DNS Editor is disabled by default. It is disabled by means of the pre-defined "disabled" feature list in WHM » Packages » Feature Manager.

You can read more about Feature Manager and how it can be used to enable or disable any icon in the cPanel interface at:
    http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/view/AllDocumentation/WHMDocs/FeatureManager
  15. Q - Where can i find more details on the Blackberry fast features ? Docs seem sparse Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We have updated our documentation so you can now find details on the FastMail functionality. The documentation is available at:
    http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/vief/AllDocumentation/CpanelDocs/EmailAccounts#BlackBerry_FastMailService

If you have any further questions, feel welcome to contact us at sales@cpanel.net.
  16. Q - Is there a way to copy cPanel accounts from one server to another inside WHM? For example where you can transfer a clients cPanel account to your server inside WHM. Yes, in your WHM interface (the destination server), go to the Transfers section of the WHM interface and click on "Copy an account from another server." Here, you will be prompted for how to login to the remote server and gain root access. Also, you will be prompted for which account you want to migrate from the remote server.
  17. Q - Does cpanel have any better control panel support for logs, for example the fact that in the UK it is now law to log email data for a set amount of time by law? While improvements have been made in version 11.25 for log handling, these improvements focus on statistics and bandwidth logging for websites. These enhancements do not influence how mail data is logged.

If you need assistance with configuring a cPanel and WHM environment to archive the data you require for legal compliance, feel welcome to contact our technical analysts.
  18. Q - It is possible to order a migration service from H-Sphere Control Panel? At this time, our migration services do not include migrations from H-Sphere.
  19. Q - Can we disable Squirrelmail and Horde leaving only Roundcube for our customers? Yes. This is accomplished by going to WHM » Server Configuration » Tweak Settings and under the "Mail" heading, unchecking "Horde Webmail" and "SquirrelMail Webmail." Be sure to click "Save" at the bottom of that screen to apply these settings.

If you only have reseller-level access to the cPanel/WHM server, please refer to this forum post instead:

  20. Q - How will the upgrade be handled if the server is set to automatic updates. cPanel automatic updates automatically execute on your server. No intervention is required on your part. Besides a slight increase in server load, you may notice that the cPanel/WHM/Webmail service may be offline for a few seconds while it restarts after the update. No server backups are required, nor is any server rebooting needed.
  21. Q - There can be any kind of problems or issues care of when performing the upgrade 11.24 to 11.25 in a production environment? For a significant majority of servers, there will be no issues with this upgrade. Version 11.25 has set a higher bar for a quality software release. However, there are fringe cases that are known to have issues with 11.25:

If you are using a cPanel/WHM server that has been in production use for many years and still utilizes the mbox format of storing mail, you will need to migrate to the maildir format before being able to successfully use the mail functionality of cPanel/WHM 11.25. If you are part of this very small group of cPanel/WHM administrators that are not using maildir, you can perform this conversion by going to WHM » Email » Mail Directory Conversion System. Our technical analysts are also on duty 24/7 including holidays to assist you with this mail conversion.

If you have created your own custom theme, all the improvements in 11.25 will not propagate to your custom theme. Instead, we recommend using our branding system. You can read more about this at:
    http://www.cpanel.net/blog/integration/2010/01/recommendations-from-the-field.html

Very old software that has not been maintained since before cPanel/WHM introduced APIs can conflict with some settings in cPanel/WHM 11.25. If you maintain such software, we recommend reviewing:
    http://www.cpanel.net/blog/integration/2009/12/known-integration-issues-inside-of-1125.html
  22. Q - Question not specific to 11.25 - how much functionality do APIs have through remote keys? Our APIs offer very many capabilities, which you can learn more about at http://sdk.cPanel.net. However, an individual reseller or cPanel user will only have as much ability via the APIs as they do via the cPanel and WHM interfaces. All the API calls are routed through the same permissions system to ensure your users cannot perform unauthorized tasks via the APIs.
  23. Q - Will answers to all questions be posted on web site later? Yes. Slides are available at: http://bit.ly/011410webinar1125
  24. Q - Why is the username_ being removed from MySQL databases? What advantage does this give? This capability is being added to cPanel/WHM to allow for easier migrations from non-cPanel/WHM environments. Adding this capability negates the requirement to change the names of all user databases (and thus the configuration files of the scripts relying on those databases) as part of the migration process.
  25. Q - 11.25 has delayed bind/named restarts. Do we need to have DNSONLY 11.25 to benefit from this in DNS cluster configuration using DNSONLY? Yes.
